Stuttgart 21: Lattice shell built - Deutsche Bahn unveils first entrance portal of the future main station
Welcome to the world of Stuttgart's future main station! The first of the steel and glass lattice shells that will arch over the entrance areas of the future through station has been completed. On Thursday, July 10, 2025, Deutsche Bahn used a crane to remove the protective tarpaulin that had previously covered the steel and glass construction at the southern end of the through station. Afterwards, the view of the entrance portal through which travelers will access the trains in the future was unobstructed for the first time.
Olaf Drescher, Chairman of the Management Board of DB Projekt Stuttgart-Ulm GmbH: "The architectural magic can now be felt not only under the chalice supports, but also from outside the station. The transparent design of the entrance portals to the new platform hall will give travelers a special sense of welcome. We are thus creating an appropriate entrance to the heart of the new rail hub, which will enable significantly more and faster train connections."
Andreas Hafner, Managing Director of seele GmbH: "The lattice shell is a perfect example of how design and construction can come together: The balance of aesthetics, function and structure makes it a unique building that requires the highest level of technical expertise to realize the desired architectural lightness."
With the new entrance portal at the southern end, the platforms of the future main station are easily accessible, especially from the Kernerviertel, the Staatsgalerie, the new light rail station of the same name and the Planetarium.
The seele Group, which specializes in complex façade constructions and is headquartered in Gersthofen near Augsburg, began building the lattice shells almost a year ago. In the fall of 2024, seele specialists installed the last steel struts of the lattice shell at the south end.
The installation of the 725 elements made of special glass began immediately afterwards. The construction of the other lattice shells is well advanced and the construction of the light eyes, which close off the characteristic chalice supports at the top and for which seele is also responsible, is on the home straight.
Unique roof construction
The roof of Stuttgart's future main station, designed by architect Christoph Ingenhoven, is a concrete shell construction that has never been built before. The design envisages an airy, bright atmosphere for the station concourse. Daylight is distributed evenly throughout the platform concourse through the light eyes, each covering up to 350 square meters. 27 light eyes and a steel and glass lattice shell close off the 28 chalice columns at the top. A lattice shell spans the so-called special chalice, which will later be one of the main entrances to the platforms. The lattice shell now unveiled also arches over one of the entrances to the future main station.
The construction of the future station began in 1997 as part of a design competition. The 32-member jury unanimously selected the design by Ingenhoven from 126 submitted proposals.
Figures, data, facts about the mesh trays
- A total of four steel and glass lattice shells will be built: in the Staatsgalerie area, at Kurt-Georg-Kiesinger-Platz, at the station tower and later in the direction of the Rosenstein district
- 725 glass elements per grid shell, 443 glass elements on the tower
- Height: between 8.50 and 12 meters
